Volte-face begins with an introduction of the organ, in which an almost constantly present note c intersects a well-defined play of chords. From there begins a song-like structure in which the singing voice works its way up from the bottom to finally rise above the viscous stream of arpeggios made by the organ. A cluster swells into a wall of sound, after which the laying note, which has not moved from its place since the beginning, disappears. The voice plods along steadily over a low mud of organ sounds, evoking melancholic memories of the chord play with which the work began.
